Nexus Mods has updated its policy regarding mods created with generative artificial intelligence, refining a single broad tag into three distinct labels. This change aims to provide more specific filtering options for users and clearer categorization for developers.

The modding site, which permits AI-generated content provided it does not infringe on rights or misuse assets, announced the update on July 29th. Community manager Myrddin explained that the previous "AI-Generated Content" tag was insufficient, failing to capture the nuances of how AI tools are employed in mod development. The new system aims to address this by allowing for more precise identification and filtering.

The three new tags are "AI-Generated Content," "AI Media," and "AI Assisted." "AI-Generated Content" is intended for mods where AI has been used to create core elements such as code, dialogue, voice lines, or in-game assets. "AI Media" applies to content like promotional art, video, or mod descriptions generated by AI, which are not part of the mod's in-game functionality. The "AI Assisted" tag is for mods where AI involvement was limited, such as for texture or audio upscaling, or concept art that did not make it into the final build. This tag requires modders to demonstrate significant human development effort and provide evidence of their expertise.

Nexus Mods clarified that the "AI Assisted" tag is not for mods primarily created by AI; those should still fall under "AI-Generated Content." For the "AI Assisted" tag, creators must be able to show proof of their development process and understanding of the mod's workings, essentially verifying human-led design and implementation.

By introducing these more specific tags, Nexus Mods hopes to make searching for mod content more intuitive and allow users greater control over the types of mods they encounter. The platform has also removed the old reporting category for AI-Generated Content, which was found to be ineffective. The focus now shifts to ensuring accurate tagging, with miscategorized or improperly tagged mods being in violation of Nexus Mods' terms of service and subject to moderation.

Nexus Mods plans to continue evaluating the impact of these new tags and will consider user feedback for ongoing adjustments. The site acknowledges that the use of AI in mod creation is evolving and intends to adapt its policies accordingly.
