Nicolas Cage Refuses to Work With Amazon Again Over AI Concerns

Nicolas Cage has stated that he will "probably not work with" Amazon again following his refusal to sign an AI waiver for the Prime Video series Spider-Noir. The actor, known for his roles in National Treasure and Face/Off, expressed his opposition to artificial intelligence during a panel at New York Comic Con 2026.

Cage's involvement with the Spider-Noir series concluded when the show was canceled last month. However, he indicated that even a potential renewal would not have been appealing due to the studio's embrace of AI technology. "Amazon is a very AI-friendly company, to the tune of $50 billion invested in OpenAI. I'm not an AI-friendly actor," Cage stated. "I'm not part of their club. I didn't sign the waiver to use AI on Spider-Noir. I'll probably not work with that studio again, but that's OK."

This stance aligns with Cage's previous public statements against AI in creative fields. In early 2025, he used the Saturn Awards to voice his concerns, asserting that "robots cannot reflect the human condition for us." He elaborated that allowing AI to influence a performance could erode artistic integrity, replacing it with purely financial considerations.

Cage's aversion to AI extends beyond his own potential projects. He expressed admiration for younger directors like Kane Parsons, the creator of Backrooms, who have spoken out about the "genuinely harmful consequences" of generative AI. Cage indicated a desire to collaborate with emerging filmmakers who are creating content from the ground up.

Despite the end of his work on Spider-Noir, Cage has several upcoming projects. He is set to star as John Madden in a film that may be his final collaboration with Amazon MGM. Additionally, he is expected to appear in the upcoming season of HBO's True Detective and will reprise his voice role in the animated film Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, scheduled for release in 2027.

Reflecting on the cancellation of Spider-Noir, Cage commented that "one season is perfect" for the project, allowing him to convey what he intended with the character. He described the Spider-Man iteration as "dangerous, innovative, pop-art" and looked forward to future endeavors.
