NFL fans have shared strong reactions on social media to the initial clip showcasing Nicolas Cage as John Madden in the forthcoming film titled "Madden." The Oscar-winning actor is set to portray the iconic football commentator and coach.
Directed by David O. Russell, the movie will explore Madden's relationship with Al Davis, played by Christian Bale. The film's synopsis indicates it will follow Madden's career trajectory from a Super Bowl-winning partnership with the Raiders to becoming one of football's most recognized voices, and eventually contributing to the creation of the "Madden NFL" video game.
The released clip features Cage's Madden in a broadcast booth setting, breaking down a play on a telestrator opposite Joel Murray's Pat Summerall. A significant portion of the fan response on social media has centered on Cage's vocal performance, with many expressing disappointment that he does not emulate the distinctive voice of the real John Madden.
Some fans voiced their displeasure directly on social media platforms. Comments included sentiments that the portrayal was "a disgraceful portrayal of a great man," a "nightmare," and an "insulting caricature." Several users questioned how the film was made, with one noting that Cage himself had reportedly told the director that Madden's voice "may not be anatomically possible" for him to replicate. Another commenter stated, "He sounds like 10% Jimmy Stewart, 90% Nicolas Cage. 0% Madden."
Criticism also extended to the depiction of Pat Summerall, with one user calling it "even more disrespectful" and stating the actor looked, sounded, and acted nothing like him. The film's director, David O. Russell, also faced scrutiny, with one social media account suggesting that "Madden" could be detrimental to his future directorial career if it proves to be a commercial or critical failure, especially given past reports of his difficult working style.
In addition to Cage and Bale, the "Madden" film features Kathryn Hahn, Sienna Miller, John Mulaney, and Shane Gillis. The movie is scheduled to open in select theaters on November 18, 2026, distributed by Amazon MGM Studios.
