Ninja Theory, the studio behind the acclaimed Hellblade series, is experiencing significant staff layoffs as part of ongoing restructuring and widespread cuts at Xbox. Developers have taken to LinkedIn to share news of their redundancies, marking a difficult period for the UK-based studio.
Consultation Process and Failed Sale
The situation at Ninja Theory stems from a broader "reset" announced by Xbox in July, which included plans for 3,200 job cuts and studio reductions. Initially, Xbox sought to transfer ownership of Ninja Theory to another company to ensure its survival and continued work on projects like the recently revealed Senua's Saga: Hellblade II. However, Xbox COO Matt Booty confirmed that two separate sale agreements "fell through," leading the studio into a consultation process with Xbox and moving towards potential closure.
Developer Testimonies
Despite the uncertainty surrounding the studio's ultimate fate, employees are now facing redundancy. Several developers have posted heartfelt messages on LinkedIn. Daniele Galante, a principal sound designer, shared his sadness after nearly nine years at the studio, stating, "Although I am not going to pretend I am not sad about having to say goodbye to many friends, I feel ready for my next adventure, knowing that I will bring with me a huge wealth of experience gained at Ninja and throughout my previous roles."
Gameplay programmer Katrin Mair described Ninja Theory as more than just a job, noting, "I moved to the UK for Ninja. It was where I started my career in the games industry, and it ended up becoming such a big part of my life." Principal programmer Stefano Prosperi echoed these sentiments, expressing a mix of "sadness, uncertainty and disappointment" after 13 years with the company, but also feeling "incredibly fortunate" to have worked with talented individuals and on projects they cared about.
Ongoing Uncertainty at Xbox
These layoffs at Ninja Theory are part of a larger, ongoing reorganization within Xbox, which has already seen cuts at other studios. The continuing restructuring has left developers at various Xbox-owned studios anxious about potential future redundancies. Ninja Theory has been recognized for its distinctive work, particularly with the critically praised Hellblade series, with Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2 having received a five-star review from Eurogamer in 2024, described as "triumphant."
