Nintendo revealed Metroid Ravenous, a new 2D installment in the acclaimed Metroid series, during its latest Nintendo Direct presentation. The game is scheduled to launch on January 28, 2027, and will be an exclusive title for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 console.
An announcement trailer for Metroid Ravenous features Samus Aran narrating her encounter with a mysterious enemy group on a moon, which leads her into an escape from the depths below. The trailer showcases typical 2D Metroid action, with Samus confronting various adversaries and demonstrating a new energy-draining ability. This absorption mechanic appears to alter Samus' suit and grant her new offensive capabilities, including a menacing green energy form seen in the trailer, hinting at a "eat or be eaten" dynamic.
While Nintendo has not officially confirmed the developer, speculation points to MercurySteam, the studio behind the critically successful Metroid Dread and Metroid: Samus Returns. Metroid Ravenous appears to share similar aesthetics and gameplay elements with Metroid Dread, suggesting a continuation of the style that earned widespread praise.
In addition to the game, Nintendo plans to release a special edition bundle. This collector's edition will include a SteelBook case and an amiibo figure depicting Samus in one of her newly absorbed forms. Two additional amiibo figures, one of Samus and another of a Chozo statue, will also be available on the game's launch date.
