Nintendo Celebrates First Pikmin Day with New Game Features and Animated Shorts

Nintendo has officially declared November 1 as Pikmin Day, a new annual celebration for the beloved strategy franchise. The inaugural Pikmin Day was marked with a surprise Nintendo Direct presentation, hosted by franchise creator Shigeru Miyamoto, that detailed several new additions and updates across the Pikmin series.

Miyamoto explained the choice of November 1 as Pikmin Day, humorously suggesting that the three original Pikmin standing side-by-side resemble the number '111,' thus leading to the November 1 date. Regardless of the playful reasoning, the day served as a platform for significant Pikmin-related news.

Pikmin 4 Enhancements and Demo The Nintendo Switch version of Pikmin 4, launching November 12, received an overview of its new features. These include microphone voice commands for controlling Oatchi and an expanded Dandori Academy mode. In Dandori Academy, players can strategize their optimal routes, with weekend exams allowing them to test their planning skills. Each exam offers a single attempt, presenting a strategic challenge akin to limited-time events in other games.

A demo for the Pikmin 4 Switch 2 version will be available starting November 2. This demo will feature the game's opening area and two Dandori Academy stages, allowing players to sample the new features.

Pikmin Bloom Introduces Secret Caves The mobile game Pikmin Bloom is set to receive a significant update this winter with the introduction of Secret Caves. Players will need to find cave maps, often found attached to postcards, or by completing exams in Pikmin 4. Once a cave is discovered, players can send their Pikmin to explore it autonomously. Battles may occur within the caves, but players can recall their Pikmin using a whistle if they are in danger. Defeated Pikmin will automatically recover after a waiting period. Successfully clearing a cave will reward players with new treasures for their collection.

Animated Shorts Expand the Pikmin Universe The Pikmin Day Direct also showcased new animated content. Actress Fuka Koshiba joined Miyamoto to introduce a new "Hello Pikmin" animated short, which featured a Pikmin evading a toad. This short is the first of many planned, with another slated for release later in November. Following this, monthly "Hello Pikmin" shorts will begin in December, further expanding the narrative and charm of the Pikmin world.
