Nintendo has detailed a wide array of upcoming content and updates to commemorate the 40th anniversary of The Legend of Zelda series. The announcements, made during a dedicated Nintendo Direct livestream, span from a live-action film to significant updates for the Nintendo Museum and a highly anticipated remake of a N64 classic.
The Legend of Zelda Live-Action Film
A live-action film based on The Legend of Zelda is slated for theatrical release on April 30. While a trailer was not shown, Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto confirmed that the absence of a subtitle in the film's title is intentional, with further explanations to be revealed upon the movie's debut.
Nintendo Museum Enhancements
The Nintendo Museum will receive Zelda-themed additions, including updated tickets featuring series iconography and a new photo opportunity commencing November 5. In the fall, the museum will also introduce a Super Family restaurant that will incorporate Nintendo characters and props.
Commemorative Merchandise and Events
To mark the anniversary, Nintendo is collaborating with various partners on a range of merchandise. This includes a second volume of the official Zelda book for the Nintendo Museum, new amiibo figures, and playable Ocarina of Time ocarinas. Additionally, Lego will release a set featuring Link and Epona, Hasbro will offer figures of Link, Zelda, and Ganondorf along with an electronic Master Sword toy, and Huzzle will produce recreations of the Master Sword. A 40th Anniversary Concert tour is also planned, with initial dates in Japan followed by stops in North America, Europe, and Australia. The North American leg begins on February 22, 2027, in Chicago.
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Remake
Perhaps the most significant announcement is the upcoming remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for the Switch 2. Nintendo indicated that this remake will be a faithful adaptation, diverging from the open-world exploration focus of more recent titles like Breath of the Wild. Key enhancements include the addition of a jump button, increased NPC dialogue, motion controls for aiming, a journal with objective markers, a sprint function for Link, expanded areas such as Hyrule town square, and the ability to play ocarina songs by humming into the Switch 2's microphone. The remake will also feature full voice acting in cutscenes. While visually updated, areas like Hyrule Field are noted to retain their original, more barren feel. The game is scheduled for release on November 5.
Zelda Notes Update and Hardware
The Switch app add-on Zelda Notes will be updated to support the Ocarina of Time remake, offering features such as stat tracking for enemies defeated and distance traveled, journey documentation through photos, and location guidance for unlocking new songs via a companion phone app.
New amiibo figures depicting Young Link and Young Zelda are set to release in 2027, which will unlock in-game masks. Furthermore, a Legend of Zelda-themed Switch 2 system, accompanied by a Pro controller and carrying case, will be available on October 29. This special console bundle will not include the Ocarina of Time remake.
A trailer for the Ocarina of Time remake was also shown, offering a glimpse of adult Link and familiar dungeons and monsters from the original game.
