Nintendo's latest Indie World Showcase, despite its brief 15-minute runtime, offered a substantial look at several upcoming independent games for the Nintendo Switch. Among the highlights were an action-adventure title reminiscent of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, a visually striking retro-inspired platformer, and a new JRPG drawing clear inspiration from Chrono Trigger.
The presentation kicked off with the release date announcement for The Witchbrook. Following that, Shark Jump's action-adventure game, Winds of Viridia, was revealed. The game features a protagonist with a mothbug companion and showcases a distinctive art style, with music by Christopher Larkin, known for his work on Hollow Knight: Silksong. A demo for Winds of Viridia is available now on Nintendo Switch, with a full release slated for early next year.
City of None, an action-puzzle platformer from co-creator of Celeste, Noel Berry, and his brother Liam, also captured attention. The game boasts a unique retro pixel art style with a dynamic four-color palette. City of None is scheduled to launch on Nintendo Switch in 2027.
Threads of Time, a JRPG developed by Balor Games and Riyo Games, presented a visual style that evokes Square Enix's HD-2D approach. The game's premise involves time travel to different eras, including the Middle Ages and a cyberpunk future, reminiscent of Chrono Trigger. It features turn-based combat and is targeting a Summer 2027 release on Nintendo Switch.
Beyond these standout titles, the showcase also featured several other notable inclusions. Multiple games with raccoon characters were observed. A popular golf game from Steam is heading to the Switch, and a roguelike brawler titled Tenjutsu, from a developer associated with Dead Cells, was also presented.
