Nintendo President: Switch 2 is Just the Beginning of a Multi-Year Plan

Nintendo of America president and COO Devon Pritchard has stated that the company views the Switch 2 as being in the nascent stages of its lifecycle. Speaking in a recent interview, Pritchard indicated that Nintendo has a multi-year strategy that extends beyond game development to encompass broader IP expansion into various entertainment mediums.

"We're at the beginning of Nintendo Switch 2," Pritchard told Variety. "This is just beginning, and we've already had some really wonderful experiences, both ours and third-party, come to the table, and I can't wait to see what the system is going to do and what our talented developers will bring to the table. But again, those partnerships and touchpoints with companies like Sony and Sony Pictures around how we can bring those experiences more broadly to not only our current players and fans but to new ones, I think that's one of the most exciting things for us over the next few years."

Pritchard's comments suggest a departure from the traditional hardware lifecycle, which previously saw consoles typically lasting around five years. The original Switch, released in 2017, remained a relevant hardware option well into the 2020s before its successor, the Switch 2, arrived in mid-2025. Nintendo itself had acknowledged the potential longevity of its previous console, with president Shuntaro Furukawa noting in 2022 that the Switch had reached the midpoint of its lifespan.

Even with the Switch 2's release, the original Switch continues to be sold. Its more accessible price point, even after recent adjustments, positions it as a viable option for budget-conscious consumers, particularly given its extensive game library. Nintendo has not yet indicated a discontinuation date for the original model.

Nintendo's business strategy has evolved significantly since the Switch's launch. The company has increasingly focused on monetizing its services, from Nintendo Switch Online subscriptions to offering paid upgrades for games transitioning to the Switch 2. This approach has also seen Nintendo expand into film production, notably through its partnership with Illumination. The Super Mario Bros. Movie grossed over $1 billion globally in 2023, with its sequel, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, achieving even greater success with $1.3 billion at the box office. Nintendo's upcoming projects include a live-action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda film and new titles for the Switch 2, such as a remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and a new mainline Pokémon game.
