Nintendo is reportedly exploring the possibility of an OLED version of its upcoming Switch 2 console, according to a report from ZDNet Korea via Digital Foundry. However, significant concerns about pricing and consumer willingness to pay a premium in a challenging market are currently a major hurdle.
The potential Switch 2 OLED model could utilize a 1080p OLED panel sourced from Samsung Display. This would represent a substantial upgrade over the current Switch 2's LCD screen, which has faced criticism for its HDR capabilities and motion clarity, especially when compared to the previous Nintendo Switch OLED model. The improved contrast and responsiveness of an OLED panel would better complement the Switch 2's more powerful hardware.
Despite the technological advantages, Nintendo's primary worry centers on the projected cost increase. The company has already announced plans to raise the price of the current LCD Switch 2, and further price hikes for a premium OLED version could prove a difficult sell. The report suggests that a Switch 2 OLED, if it were to be released as early as 2028, would face significant challenges in pricing before development even begins later this year.
In related news, Nintendo is preparing to launch a new iteration of the Switch 2 in the European Union in the near future. This version will include a replaceable battery to comply with new EU consumer regulations and will also lead to the discontinuation of the original Switch model in the region.
