Despite the focus on major releases like Nintendo Switch Sports Resort and the remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, it is Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream that has become Nintendo's biggest earner in the West for 2026. Market analysis firm Newzoo reports that from January to September, the life simulation game ranked as the third-highest revenue-generating new release across six major Western markets: the U.S., U.K., France, Germany, Italy, and Spain. This places it ahead of significant titles such as Resident Evil Requiem, Pokémon Pokopia, Crimson Desert, and Forza Horizon 6. In August, prior to these latest figures, Nintendo had already announced that Tomodachi Life had sold 8 million copies by the end of June.
The game's success is attributed to several factors. It is a prominent release for the original Switch, which continues to maintain a larger player base than the newer Switch 2. Furthermore, Tomodachi Life benefits from its social virality, with numerous humorous clips circulating online likely driving sales. Nintendo UK's recent "Back to Me" advertising campaign, which features a young student creating a Mii of his father in Tomodachi Life, also highlights the game's appeal and its role in cross-generational engagement. This campaign subtly underscores Nintendo's messaging that Switch games are playable on the Switch 2, demonstrating the enduring appeal of their software library.
The unexpected commercial performance of Tomodachi Life suggests that impactful video games do not always conform to traditional expectations of genre or presentation. Its broad appeal, including significant engagement from female players, may have contributed to its success being historically underreported.
