Nintendo's Switch 2 console has experienced a year-on-year sales decline of over a third in the quarter ending June 30, according to the company's latest financial report. During this period, 3.82 million Switch 2 units were sold, a notable decrease from the 5.82 million units sold in the same quarter last year, which followed the console's early June 2025 launch. This marks the first time Nintendo has offered direct year-on-year sales comparisons for the Switch 2.

Nintendo attributes the sales dip to the immense pent-up demand that fueled the console's initial launch, a year after its predecessor's highly successful debut. The company insists that the Switch 2's life-to-date sales performance continues to compare "favorably" against the original Switch at equivalent points in their lifecycles, reinforcing its status as Nintendo's fastest-selling console ever. However, the Switch 2 benefited from launching alongside Nintendo's best-selling console of all time, providing a strong foundational market, unlike the original Switch, which had to gradually build momentum after the less successful Wii U.

Software sales for the Switch 2 have seen year-on-year growth, attributed to a larger available library of titles. Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream achieved strong sales, with 7.96 million copies sold in its first three months. Pokémon Pokopia also continues to perform well, selling an additional 1.27 million copies outside of Japan. Mario Kart World has reached 15.39 million total sales after selling another 690,000 copies last quarter, while Donkey Kong Bananza has sold 4.78 million units in total. Kirby Air Riders has sold 1.9 million copies, and Super Mario Party Jamboree – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition has sold 1.15 million.

Nintendo offered a subdued update on Yoshi and the Mysterious Book and Star Fox, stating that both titles have performed steadily, though it is still early in their sales cycles. No sales figures have yet been released for Metroid Prime 4: Echoes. Meanwhile, titles from the original Nintendo Switch continue to sell, with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe selling an additional 450,000 copies, bringing its total to an impressive 71.53 million. Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate each sold another 380,000 copies, reaching totals of 50.29 million and 38.14 million respectively.

In terms of digital versus physical sales, Nintendo reported a 2.2 percentage point increase in the digital sales ratio, now standing at 61.5%. This trend may be influenced by Nintendo's recent strategy of offering new downloadable Switch 2 games at lower prices than their physical counterparts.

Total annual playing users for Nintendo have remained stable at 130 million, indicating a plateau after significant growth in previous years. Upcoming Switch 2 releases include Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave on September 17, Switch Sports Resort on October 22, and a remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time before the end of the year. For 2027, Nintendo has announced Xenoblade Genesis and Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves.
