Nintendo has announced that production of the original Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED models will cease in Europe by mid-February 2027. This decision is driven by new European legislation mandating that batteries in consumer appliances be easily removable and replaceable by users. Similar updates are expected to follow in other global markets.
In preparation for these upcoming changes, which go into effect in mid-February 2027, Nintendo will begin introducing revised versions of its products with user-replaceable batteries in Europe starting in summer 2026. These revised models will include the Nintendo Switch 2 console, its Pro controller, and both original and Switch 2 Joy-Cons. The company also stated that the N64 and GameCube controllers for the Switch 2 will receive similar battery revisions.
Nintendo has clarified that these revised products will not differ in functionality from their current counterparts. The company plans a rolling release of these updated products across Europe, with initial revised models expected in summer 2026, followed by additional products in autumn, winter, and early 2027. Availability may vary by country.
These changes will introduce minor alterations in weight and battery capacity. The Switch 2 console will be approximately 10 grams heavier without Joy-Cons and 14 grams heavier with them attached. Its battery capacity will be reduced by 1%, while the Switch 2 Pro controller's battery capacity will be 16% smaller, though the controller itself will be 7 grams lighter.
For consumers in Europe, details regarding the availability of each revised product on the Nintendo Store have been provided. The new Switch 2 console with a replaceable battery is slated for an autumn release.
