Nintendo Switch Sports Resort Preview: A Lively Return to Wuhu Island

Nintendo Switch Sports Resort is set to bring players back to the revitalized Wuhu Island on October 22 for the Switch 2. While the series' cultural impact has diminished since the original Wii Sports phenomenon, this latest installment promises hours of lighthearted fun.

This iteration features a heavily upgraded Wuhu Island, explorable via Skateboard, Prop Plane, and Power Cruiser. Navigating the island is an intuitive experience, with controls that mimic real-world actions. The Skateboard allows for simple kick-push motions and steering, while the Prop Plane uses tilt controls and gyroscope for flight. The Power Cruiser jet ski is controlled by holding two Joy-Cons like handlebars, with tilting for steering and twisting to accelerate. Exploration is further enhanced by discovering tourist photo spots that detail Wuhu Island's history and collecting items for avatar customization.

Beyond exploration, the core of Nintendo Switch Sports Resort lies in its diverse sports. Thumb Wrestling offers a quirky challenge where players attempt to pin their opponent's thumb. Archery includes a special mode where up to four players can simultaneously aim at different parts of the same target, with friendly fire penalties. Boxing requires players to defend against attacks and time their counter-punches. Table Tennis focuses on outmaneuvering opponents to force errors, and Bowling returns with a focus on spin and aim rather than release timing.

During a preview session, the controls for most sports were found to be responsive, though Boxing's motion controls occasionally faltered. The game introduces new variants for existing sports, such as a 100-pin Bowling mode. A significant addition is the Island Crown mode, a competitive challenge where players aim to defeat 20 CPU opponents across nine sports to ascend the ranks and face each sport's Island Legend boss. This mode appears poised to offer substantial replayability.

Despite the fading mainstream significance of the franchise with each entry, Nintendo Switch Sports Resort successfully delivers on its promise of casual, engaging fun. The variety of bite-sized minigames and modes is designed to entertain both solo players and groups, offering a welcome return to the series' accessible and enjoyable gameplay.
