The Discord server for the popular, yet controversial, Terraria mod Calamity has been compromised by a hacker known as Kata. The incident occurred on October 9, following the mod's developers announcing the cessation of all development in August after facing renewed allegations of endangering minors and unpaid wages.
The Calamity Mod Discord server, which previously hosted over 250,000 members, was breached when its owner was allegedly tricked into giving up access by individuals posing as former moderators. During a roughly hour-long window, the server was flooded with links to a newly created cryptocurrency named after the server itself. Shortly after the community was alerted to the scam by subreddit moderators, the cryptocurrency was reportedly pumped and dumped.
This event marks the latest in a series of controversies surrounding the decade-old Calamity mod. Previous accusations have included allegations of endangering minors and failing to pay developers substantial wages. The hack has led to an "EMERGENCY PSA" from the r/CalamityMod subreddit moderators, urging users to leave the Discord server and avoid engaging with the cryptocurrency promotion.
Kata, the hacker identified in the incident, has a history of compromising numerous Discord servers over the past two years. Following the discovery of the scam, a former moderator was able to wipe the server's contents, removing channels and messages. However, the hackers reportedly still control at least one channel, attempting to control the narrative despite the community's awareness of the scam. Tens of thousands of users have reportedly left the server in the wake of the breach and subsequent cryptocurrency scam.
