Novus Inceptio, Early Access Survival Game, Receives First Update Since 2018

Novus Inceptio, a survival game that first entered early access in October 2015, has received its first substantial update since 2018. The solo developer behind the project, McMagic Productions (Martin Markus Mastný), has announced a return to development, stating, "the energy and the will to finish the project are back."

The update brings significant changes to the game, including an expansion of the playable area from 9 km² to 64 km² of wilderness. Combat mechanics have also been rebuilt. While the game is currently singleplayer, plans are in place to introduce co-op functionality in the future.

Mastný cited burnout as the reason for the prolonged development hiatus. He explained that after the early access launch in 2015, he was overwhelmed by the demands of community management, bug fixing, and PR on top of development. This led to him accommodating player requests and compromises, which he feels ultimately detracted from the original vision of the game. "The result was total collapse and burnout. It basically ruined the whole game, too," Mastný stated.

The decision to return to Novus Inceptio stems from a desire to fulfill the original vision and to responsibly conclude a significant chapter of his life. "It's a kind of responsibility to all those people, to close this chapter fairly and well," he said.

Addressing skeptical players, Mastný admitted he cannot make promises but urged patience and asked players to observe his continued progress. He sees early access as an opportunity to adapt and respond to community feedback, a process he intends to continue. "Watch it if you want, and you'll see whether you give me that trust back or not," he advised.

For other solo developers working on survival games, Mastný recommends focusing on personal enjoyment, learning from existing titles, and being prepared for increased competition in the genre. He also highlighted the importance of recognizing when personal creative visions might hinder a project's success, suggesting that stepping back from an idea is sometimes necessary, a lesson he has learned with distance and experience.
