Nvidia's Artificial Intelligence and Chatbot Engine (ACE) technology, previously utilized to create AI teammates in PUBG: Battlegrounds, is set to be integrated into the creature-collecting open-world RPG Aniimo. Developed by China-based Pawprint Studio, Aniimo is expected to launch with this feature in early 2027, allowing players to engage in natural conversations with their in-game creatures.
According to Nvidia senior product marketing manager Ike Nnoli, the ACE integration will enable players to speak directly with their Aniimos. This interaction will extend to teaching them new skills such as crafting and mining, and discovering their individual personalities. The system is designed to allow for a more dynamic and engaging relationship between players and their digital companions.
While the ACE tech in PUBG focused on enhancing NPC combat tactics, its application in Aniimo leans more towards a conversational AI model, reminiscent of virtual pet simulations. Pawprint Studio has implemented specific guardrails to manage player interaction. Conversations and creature actions will be confined to the player's home base, a designated area for crafting, mining, and resource gathering. The creatures will respond through specific actions and emojis, rather than voice.
Nvidia stated that developers have complete control over how characters respond to players, including the ability to set action and response limitations. This approach aims to prevent potential exploits, such as players manipulating AI for premature quest or task completion, an issue encountered in other games. Aniimo's implementation focuses on these controlled interactions within a defined gameplay space.
The integration of generative AI into creature companions follows a growing trend of AI implementation in gaming. The Aniimo implementation is expected to be a more contained experience, similar to AI-powered virtual pets, with a focus on positive and controlled interactions. The game's Steam page currently lists its release window as "coming soon," but Nvidia's announcement points to early 2027 as the timeframe for the ACE technology's deployment.
