In a personal recollection for IGN, executive editor Ryan McCaffrey detailed an immersive four-day period spent in Bethesda Game Studios' basement in January 2006, playing The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion for an exclusive review. This intense preview session, occurring before the game's March 2006 release, saw McCaffrey dedicate approximately 11 hours per day to the game, totaling 44 hours over four days. This period was solitary, with McCaffrey provided with food and a dedicated space featuring a large TV and an Xbox 360 development kit.

The experience was aimed at maximizing playtime to prepare for the Official Xbox Magazine review. McCaffrey, who had previously made multiple trips to Bethesda throughout 2005 to cover the game's development, described Oblivion as the "ultimate medieval fantasy RPG come to life." He noted the significant technological leap the Xbox 360 represented, moving to 1280x720 resolution from the previous standard of 640x480, and anticipated Oblivion as a flagship title for the new console. The game was initially slated as a day-one launch title for the Xbox 360, launching simultaneously with its PC version.

During his extended preview, McCaffrey explored the world of Cyrodiil, engaging in combat, stealth, and joining factions like the Dark Brotherhood. He completed the main story questline, closed Oblivion Gates, and even encountered a tamed unicorn. The isolation of the review process, combined with the game's engaging nature, made it a memorable experience. He found it difficult to stop playing and faced the prospect of starting over with the final retail copy. McCaffrey ultimately gave Oblivion a 9.5 out of 10 in his OXM review and continued to play for over 125 hours at home, experiencing all DLC and expansions.

McCaffrey concluded that Oblivion was a pivotal game for the nascent HD Era and a significant "killer app" for the Xbox 360, driving console adoption. He expressed hope that the upcoming The Elder Scrolls 6 can capture some of the magic that made Oblivion such a defining title. The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion was released in March 2006 for Xbox 360 and PC, and later for PlayStation 3.
