Obsession Star Inde Navarrette Studied Anime for Screenwriting Insights

Inde Navarrette, known for her role as Nikki Freeman in the film Obsession, has shared that she studied anime, including Jujutsu Kaisen and Demon Slayer, to deepen her understanding of screenwriting and storytelling.

Navarrette explained that during a period of uncertainty about her career following the film's completion and prior to its release, she explored various creative avenues. This included streaming games on Twitch and immersing herself in anime to analyze narrative structures. She found herself particularly drawn to the storytelling methods employed in shows like Jujutsu Kaisen.

"I really dove into, ‘Why is Jujutsu Kaisen so good?’ And I learned about timeline and about storytelling — how a person can have a monologue at the beginning of the episode that matters two episodes later or even at the end, and that person’s dead and you don’t learn it until then — and then attaching that to my screenwriting and trying to learn that way," Navarrette told The Hollywood Reporter. She contrasted this with Demon Slayer, noting its more linear approach.

A self-proclaimed gamer and anime enthusiast, Navarrette also received a rare, sealed 2009 copy of Modern Warfare 2 from a fan at a convention. She has expressed interest in voice acting, citing a desire to voice a character in a Resident Evil game as a dream project, appreciating the narrative depth of that particular video game world.

Navarrette is also preparing for her role as Rogue in Marvel Studios’ X-Men reboot. She has emphasized her dedication to portraying the character accurately, stating that she is committed to doing justice to Rogue for herself, the director, and the fans.
