Obsidian Will Retain Creative Identity Under Bethesda, President Assures

Obsidian Entertainment will maintain its distinctive creative identity and strengths as it moves under the Bethesda umbrella, according to Bethesda president Jill Braff. This organizational shift is part of Xbox's broader restructuring efforts within its gaming divisions.

Recent changes at Xbox have seen significant layoffs and studio realignments. This week's developments include a further 268 roles cut and studios like Halo, Rare, and World's Edge being placed under Activision. Obsidian Entertainment, previously part of Xbox Game Studios, is now reporting to Bethesda.

While some express concern that Obsidian might be relegated to a support role, particularly as it is currently developing a new Fallout game with Bethesda Game Studios, Braff stated in an internal email that the studio's leadership and creative direction will remain intact. "The creative identity and strengths that make Obsidian distinct will remain at the core of their studio and work," Braff said. "[CEO Feargus Urquhart] and the Obsidian leadership team will continue to lead Obsidian, with the studio reporting to me."

Braff also clarified that Bethesda Game Studios will continue its stewardship of the Fallout franchise. "Together, the teams will build on their longstanding relationship and the early work already underway on a new Fallout project, with more to share in the months ahead," she added. This structure, she explained, supports a franchise-led model while maintaining clear accountability for both studios and franchises.

This transition follows a period where Obsidian reportedly lost approximately 25% of its workforce during earlier Xbox layoffs, leading to the cancellation of several projects. The new franchise-led approach appears to signal a greater focus from Xbox leadership on its major intellectual properties. Previous original titles from Obsidian, such as Avowed and The Outer Worlds 2, reportedly did not meet performance expectations, which may have influenced the decision to return the studio to the Fallout franchise.
