Starry Studio has launched a significant update for its free-to-play shooter, Once Human, titled Isles of Abyss. This new scenario introduces an oceanic archipelago, presenting players with a host of new features and mechanics, including ship construction for exploration and combat, and the ability to dive beneath the waves.
Scenario Structure
The Isles of Abyss scenario is divided into two distinct phases. The core experience lasts approximately 21 days, followed by a rest period before the cycle begins anew. Phase 1, which lasts between five to ten days depending on server purification progress, is crucial for preparation. Phase 2 extends for 11 days and culminates in an endgame challenge: a community-unlocked fight against The Sunken Lord, promising substantial rewards. During Phase 2, certain ship cannons become available, and roaming enemy ships known as Voyagers may increase in size and difficulty. Special encounters also exclusively occur during this phase, emphasizing the importance of preparation in Phase 1.
Ship Customization and Combat
Ships are central to the Isles of Abyss experience, serving as both transportation across the seas and mobile bases. Players can construct their vessels from scratch, with a wide array of customizable parts for the hull, gunwale, bow, deck, and more. These parts come in various shapes and sizes, allowing for extensive personalization. Players can also save ship designs for later modifications or to experiment with different configurations.
Underwater Exploration
Diving underwater is another key feature, with specific gear designed for this purpose. This includes suits offering resistance to ocean contamination and fish oil paste for increased temperature resistance and temporary isolation from water contamination. Stronger suits, like the shark diving suit, enhance swimming speed. Managing oxygen levels is critical during deep dives, with oxygen tanks automatically activating when depleted. Players can use a spear gun for defense or an inflatable float to ascend quickly. An air cushion can also be deployed as a temporary floating platform on the surface.
New Resources and Gear Mods
Underwater exploration serves multiple purposes, including treasure hunts for buried chests and hunting for new resources. These resources are vital for crafting and survival. Notable new resources include Ocean Trash (processed into plastic), Pirate Coin and Ambergris (used for trading), Fossil (from which acid can be extracted), Sulfur Water, Bay Crocodile Skin (for crafting gear), Tidal Gum and Tidal Fruit (for rubber processing and dishes), various seafood ingredients like Barnacle, Crab, Lobster, Oyster, Starfish, Sea Urchin, and Abalone, and Shells and Conches used in facility construction. The update also introduces new gear mods, such as Precision Load for lower body gear, which grants bullet recovery after hitting weakspots at long range, and Turret Enhancement gloves that boost damage from deployed facilities. These new mods can be obtained by challenging The Sunken Lord or by consuming 'Heart of the Ocean' during specific reward stages.
Launch Rewards
To help players prepare for the new challenges and mechanics, Once Human: Isles of Abyss will offer rewards for early sign-ins, including legendary blueprints and a commemorative weapon skin. The update coincides with the game's Halloween event, providing additional thematic items. Once Human: Isles of Abyss is available following a maintenance update on October 21 for PC, console, and mobile platforms.
