Capcom has launched a free prequel webcomic for its recently released action title, Onimusha: Way of the Sword. The comic focuses on the character Sasaki Ganryu, exploring his past and motivations.
The narrative of the webcomic begins prior to the events of the game. Its initial chapter depicts Ganryu awaiting a confrontation with Musashi Miyamoto on a deserted island. The clash is brief, with Musashi quickly defeating Ganryu before departing for Kyoto.
Despite Musashi's warning not to follow him, Ganryu, driven by a desire to challenge the only swordsman who ignites his competitive spirit, secures passage on a boat to pursue Musashi. The official Webtoons description for the comic states that "what follows is a bloody quest to reclaim his honor that leads him down a path of madness and obsession," as he discovers an oni gauntlet that grants him significant power.
While the exact length of the webcomic has not been announced, it is speculated that its story may conclude by depicting Ganryu's fight with Musashi at Kiyomizu Temple, which would seamlessly link the comic to the game. However, there is a desire for the comic to explore Ganryu's descent into madness after his defeat at the temple and before his appearance in Kyoto with the corrupted Oni Lady, as he appears to be a different person by that point in the game.
The webcomic is expected to provide additional content for fans eager for more stories involving Musashi and Ganryu, serving as a bridge between playthroughs of the game.
