Despite a highly competitive release schedule looming for September and October 2026, Capcom producer Akihito Kadowaki remains unconcerned about the launch of Onimusha: Way of the Sword. The game is slated for release on September 25, 2026, placing it amidst a period where many developers have opted to launch their titles to avoid direct competition with Grand Theft Auto 6.

This crowded release window is a consequence of publishers and developers strategically positioning their games either before or after Rockstar's highly anticipated open-world title. While this strategy aims to maximize individual game sales, it also creates intense competition among other major releases. Kadowaki acknowledged the surprise at the sheer volume of games scheduled for the autumn period. "We were pretty surprised," he stated. "We probably expected a lot of titles would be in that window, but we were still surprised to see just how many games were there."

However, Kadowaki expressed confidence in Onimusha's ability to stand out. He highlighted the game's distinctive combat mechanics, unique setting, and memorable characters as key factors that will differentiate it from other titles vying for player attention. "We've already said we're releasing it, we can't back out now!" Kadowaki quipped when asked about the challenging release timing, signaling a firm commitment to the chosen date. The game was first announced with its release window during a Sony State of Play presentation in early June, setting a trend for other titles to schedule around the GTA 6 launch. Any games not launching before or shortly after GTA 6 are reportedly being pushed to February 2027 or later.
