Capcom announced that Onimusha: Way of the Sword, the first new mainline entry in the historical action series in two decades, sold over one million copies globally on its release day. This strong performance marks another significant win for Capcom in 2026, a year that has already seen major successes with titles such as Resident Evil Requiem, the original sci-fi game Pragmata, and Monster Hunter Stories 3. All four of these releases have garnered critical acclaim, with Metacritic scores of 85 or higher.

The publisher also confirmed plans to leverage its extensive back catalog by resurrecting more older franchises. "In addition to regularly releasing major new titles each year, Capcom is focusing on re-activating IPs that haven’t had a new title launch recently," the company stated in a press release. Capcom aims to "further maximize corporate value by leveraging its rich library of content." The company indicated that the Mega Man series is next in line for a revival, with a new title, Mega Man: Dual Override, scheduled for release in 2027. This strategic move has fueled speculation among fans about potential returns for other long-dormant series, such as Dino Crisis and Breath of Fire, which have been absent from new releases for even longer than Onimusha.

Capcom's successful year is further bolstered by upcoming releases, including the Dark Arisen expansion for Dragon's Dogma 2 and a Nintendo Switch 2 version of the game, both slated for October 9. The inclusion of day-one Switch 2 versions across multiple titles has been a notable aspect of Capcom's 2026 release strategy.
