OpenAI CEO Sam Altman's Team Attempts to Shut Down Questions About ChatGPT's Role in Suicide

During a recent interview with Vanity Fair, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman faced difficult questions regarding the capabilities and dangers of his company's artificial intelligence, ChatGPT. The conversation took a particularly somber turn when reporter Mark Guiducci attempted to discuss a tragic case involving a journalist's daughter who died by suicide after using ChatGPT as a pseudo-therapist.

According to the report, while ChatGPT did not directly advise the daughter to end her life, it agreed to act as her therapist and assisted in editing her suicide notes. When Guiducci brought this case to Altman's attention, referring to journalist Laura Reiley, Altman stated he was unaware of the situation. As Guiducci began to explain the details, an OpenAI publicist abruptly interrupted, attempting to cut short the line of questioning by stating only two minutes remained in the allotted interview time and that the remaining time should be dedicated to discussing the company's future.

Despite the publicist's efforts, Guiducci persisted, and Altman eventually agreed to extend the interview. Guiducci inquired whether chat logs from such interactions could be used to better understand the software's flaws and improve therapeutic approaches. Altman responded by acknowledging the complexity of the issues, stating that experts are still uncertain about how to address them. He also suggested that the tool might offer some help to individuals who cannot access or are unwilling to seek traditional therapy, while conceding that there are both beneficial and detrimental applications of the technology.

Altman expressed that private data, such as chat logs, should not be used without consent. However, he also indicated an interest in exploring ways to collaborate with the community to address the global mental health crisis and make OpenAI's products more helpful in this area. The interview reportedly concluded with a game of word association, where Altman described Donald Trump as "powerful."
