Chronos Games & Gifts, an independently-owned game store located in Beaverton, Oregon, has temporarily suspended its Yu-Gi-Oh tournaments for a week. The decision comes after the store received numerous complaints and negative reviews concerning the hygiene of some attendees. The shop announced the suspension and the reasons behind it via a statement on its public Discord channel.

The store's statement indicated that issues with players mistreating the restrooms and general poor hygiene contributed to the decision. As a reminder to participants, Chronos Games & Gifts encouraged players to adhere to Konami's official guidelines and report any individuals who do not.

Konami itself implemented specific rules targeting player hygiene in its official tournament guidelines in 2019. These rules stipulate that all attendees, not just players, must be "clean and wear clean clothing" to avoid penalties. The Yu-Gi-Oh Tournament Guide states, "You are expected to be clean when you enter a tournament." It further explains that neglecting self-care can lead to an unpleasant atmosphere in crowded and lengthy events, and participants who do not meet the hygiene standards may be asked to rectify the issue to continue.

This policy has historically been met with support from players, and local attendees of Chronos Games & Gifts have reportedly praised the shop's move to maintain a comfortable environment. This is not an isolated incident; similar concerns about player hygiene have been addressed by other gaming communities. For example, the Nebraska Pokemon Organized Play Facebook page issued a statement in 2025 reminding players of the hygiene requirements outlined in the official Play! Pokemon Tournament Rules Handbook. That handbook also states, "Individuals are also required to maintain a socially acceptable level of hygiene during the event." Tournament organizers are given the discretion to ask participants to update their hygiene or attire, and refusal to comply can be grounds for removal from the tournament and venue.
