A demo is available now for Over the Hill, an off-road exploration game that offers a minimalist and meditative experience, standing in contrast to the expansive, content-rich nature of titles like Forza Horizon.
Developed by Funselektor Labs, with assistance from Strelka Games, Over the Hill shares the developer's previous work, Art of Rally, in its use of stylized, unlicensed renditions of classic 20th-century vehicles, such as the Land Rover Defender, Toyota Land Cruiser, and Mercedes G-Wagon. However, unlike the rally racing of Art of Rally, Over the Hill centers entirely on traversal and exploration, emphasizing the act of navigating natural landscapes.
The game draws comparisons to other titles focused on movement and environment, including the meditative climbing of Jusant and Cairn, the hiking segments in Death Stranding, and the environmental traversal in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. It also shares DNA with off-roading simulation series like Spintires, MudRunner, and SnowRunner, as well as the cooperative exploration found in games like Peak and Big Walk.
The demo for Over the Hill provides a single environment called Emerald Lake, a Canadian Alpine setting featuring forests, lakes, and mountainous trails. The visuals are characterized by Funselektor's signature clean textures, distinct low-poly models, and atmospheric lighting, creating a beautiful, warm autumnal aesthetic.
Gameplay in Over the Hill involves discovering hidden elements within the map. Players can find cosmetic customizations for their vehicles, such as fenders and lights, as well as recovery items. The game also features trail challenges, scenic viewpoints, and retrieval missions, like rescuing a bogged-down vehicle. Cabins serve as fast-travel points.
Players will need to navigate challenging terrain, which can lead to vehicles becoming stuck or overturned. Utilizing features like a winch, or considering the weather and time of day, are part of the strategic layer. The game allows for tools to alter weather conditions and provides opportunities to camp, encouraging players to experience the environment in various moods.
Despite the potential for difficulty, Over the Hill is designed to be a non-demanding experience. By encouraging players to slow down, engage low gears when necessary, and approach trails with care, the game fosters a relaxing and absorbing atmosphere. It aims to immerse players in the environment, rewarding careful observation and navigation.
Over the Hill is scheduled for release on Windows PC on October 14. Versions for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X are planned for 2027. A demo is currently available on Steam.
