Blizzard has announced that its MOBA-inspired Stadium mode in Overwatch 2 will no longer receive new heroes or maps. The decision comes as the mode accounts for only three percent of the game's daily player base, according to game director Aaron Keller.
In a recent blog post, Keller explained that while Stadium has cultivated a dedicated audience, its low engagement numbers necessitate a shift in development focus. The talented individuals who worked on Stadium will be reassigned to other areas of Overwatch 2 development. The mode will continue to receive seasonal balance updates, rank resets, and rewards, but significant content expansions are not planned.
Stadium, which launched in 2025, allows players to craft unique hero kits over several rounds, fostering a MOBA-like experience within the hero shooter. Despite being lauded for its innovative approach to hero design and potential for chaotic, strategic gameplay, the mode requires a considerable time investment, potentially deterring players in favor of more traditional Overwatch modes.
Blizzard provided a breakdown of Overwatch 2's player base distribution:
Unranked Role Queue 5v5: approximately 54% of daily players Ranked Role Queue 5v5: approximately 37% Unranked Open Queue 6v6: approximately 19% Ranked Open Queue 6v6: approximately 8% Unranked Mystery Heroes 6v6: approximately 4% Stadium Ranked: approximately 3% Stadium Unranked: approximately 3%
Of Overwatch 2's heroes, 33 were added to the Stadium mode, each requiring custom builds and abilities. The final roster of heroes available in Stadium includes tanks like D.Va, Doomfist, and Ramattra; damage heroes such as Ashe, Genji, and Soldier: 76; and support characters including Ana, Kiriko, and Mercy.
