Blizzard is fundamentally altering Sombra’s role in Overwatch 2, transitioning the popular Damage hero into a Support character in an upcoming season. This significant rework, which shifts her primary focus from offensive disruption to ally healing and utility, has met with a mixed reception from the player base, particularly among those who have mained Sombra since her introduction.

Historically, Sombra has been defined by her unique kit revolving around stealth, hacking enemy abilities, and swift escapes. Over the years, her abilities have seen numerous iterations, often to the chagrin of her dedicated players. Previous changes removed her consistent invisibility and shortened the range of her Translocator, moving her away from her original hit-and-run playstyle towards a more assassin-like role. This latest overhaul, however, represents the most drastic shift yet, moving her entirely to the Support role.

Hero Designer Scott Kennedy explained the team's rationale during a Q&A at Blizzcon. He stated that Sombra’s original three pillars as a Damage hero—invisibility, ability lock, and damage—became problematic when performed at a high level. By repositioning her as a Support, Blizzard aims to retain her core identity while reducing her offensive pressure. "If you move her into a Support role, she doesn’t need to do damage, she doesn’t need to be able to quickly execute oppositions," Kennedy noted. The rework aims to allow her to heal allies while still utilizing her invisibility and hacking capabilities, albeit with a modified application.

Many long-time Sombra players express a sense of mourning over the loss of her original disruptive capabilities. Her ability to hack key enemy ultimates, like Sigma’s Gravitic Flux or Cassidy’s Deadeye, was a defining aspect of her gameplay, requiring significant game sense and precise timing. These impactful moments of disruption are largely absent in her new Support kit.

Despite the community's mixed feelings, Sombra's rework is partly a response to her contentious history. For years, she has been one of the most banned heroes in Overwatch 2, particularly in lower ranks, suggesting that many players struggle to counter her unique abilities. This rework appears to prioritize the experience of those on the receiving end of her hacks, a decision that has alienated players who embraced her disruptive role. "It feels like the latter has taken precedence for Sombra for years now," one player lamented.

New elements in her Support kit, such as the Cyberspace ability that heals allies and debuffs enemies within an area, offer a glimpse of how Sombra might maintain some of her saboteur spirit. However, the fundamental role she has occupied for nearly a decade is undeniably changing. The transition to Support is set to arrive in Season 5, and players will have to adapt to this new iteration of the iconic hacker.
