Overwatch's upcoming hero, D.Mon, a professional gamer turned mech pilot, will feature an ultimate ability named "Limit Break." While the name strongly evokes the iconic ability from Square Enix's Final Fantasy series, narrative designer Eleni Rivera stated that the character's design does not indicate a particular fondness for the RPG franchise. Instead, the name was selected for its resonance with the ultimate's visual presentation.

"'Limit Break,' in terms of the ultimate name, it was just something that we felt really connected with the visuals," Rivera explained during a roundtable interview. "So we knew that there are other places that the name could exist, but we were just really happy with how the name kind of represented that ultimate where there is a ‘limit break.’ So, yeah, I think that was sort of the intention with that." Rivera further clarified that D.Mon is envisioned as a "hardcore gamer" with a preference for first-person shooters, rather than a fan of "sword and potion" games like Final Fantasy VII.

D.Mon shares a background with the existing hero D.Va, both being former esports professionals who now pilot mechs. This gaming pedigree is reflected in D.Mon's abilities and references, though Blizzard has historically aimed for more general nods to gaming culture rather than specific franchise homages. An earlier instance saw fans speculate about D.Va being a professional StarCraft player due to an account shown in her reveal, but Blizzard later clarified her background was in a game more aligned with the interfaces used to pilot their mechs.

D.Mon is scheduled to join the Overwatch roster on August 11.
