Overwatch 2’s Sombra Rework Shifts Her to Support, Proving Surprisingly Fun

The recent Season 5 patch for Overwatch 2 has seen a significant rework for the hero Sombra, shifting her from a damage-dealing offensive role to a support position. While initially met with skepticism, this change has resulted in a surprisingly fun and effective playstyle for the ex-Talon hacker.

A New Role, A Familiar Feel

Sombra’s original kit revolved around hacking enemies, disabling their abilities, and creating openings for her team. The transition to a support role, however, has prompted adjustments that make her feel more like a team player. Her previous tendency to operate independently on solo missions has been curtailed, largely due to her Hack ability being replaced and her Translocator having a reduced range, making it riskier for her to stray too far from her team. This encourages a more coordinated approach.

Enhanced Abilities and New Mechanics

A key change is the introduction of Hotfix, Sombra's new primary healing ability, which replaces her previous Hack. Hotfix heals allies over time and is cast similarly to Hack, with a slightly shorter casting time. This allows players to provide healing more rapidly, ensuring allies benefit even if they move out of line of sight, reducing the frustration of lost healing progress.

While not a dedicated "healbot" like Lifeweaver, Sombra now functions as an efficient healer. Her healing-over-time approach allows for a "set and forget" strategy, enabling her to return to combat and stealth maneuvers. This positions her more like heroes such as Wuyang, who focus on enabling their team rather than constantly maximizing healing output.

The standout ability in Sombra's new kit is Cyberspace, which takes the place of her former Virus ability. Virus was a damage-over-time skill shot that often felt like a minor annoyance without the preceding Hack. Cyberspace, conversely, embodies Sombra's hacker persona by applying a bespoke debuff to enemies, reducing their healing and damage output by half. This area-of-effect ability can disrupt enemy ultimates and provide Sombra with a fighting chance if caught out of position. Unlike Virus, Cyberspace does not require a direct hit to be effective.

Impact and Player Experience

Despite the drawback that enemies can escape Cyberspace's effects by leaving the created area, players have already found creative uses for it. For instance, casting Cyberspace against a wall can mitigate critical damage from abilities like Reinhardt's charge, potentially saving a teammate. The ability also offers potential counters to powerful ultimate abilities from heroes like Orisa or Reaper, preventing instant team wipes.

While some players may miss Sombra’s former ability to disrupt enemy ultimates with Hack, the rework addresses her previous inefficiencies as a damage dealer. By essentially reimagining the character, Overwatch 2 has created a Sombra that is no longer sluggish or weak, offering a more engaging experience for both the player and their teammates. This evolution has salvaged the character, providing a viable and enjoyable support option in the game's evolving roster.
