Overwatch 2 is set to evolve its battle pass system in Season 4, aiming to reduce the reliance on fear of missing out (FOMO) that has characterized many live service games. Starting next month, Blizzard will begin permanently reintroducing previously released battle passes, making their content accessible to players who may have missed them.

Returning Battle Pass System

The new system will function by making a specific old battle pass available halfway through each ongoing season. Players who did not acquire a particular battle pass previously will have an opportunity to purchase it. Once unvaulted, these passes will remain permanently accessible. However, Blizzard has stated that certain rewards will not be included in these re-released passes. Notably, premium currency, player titles, and Mythic-tier skins that were part of the original battle passes will be excluded. While older battle passes sometimes locked new heroes behind progression, these will reportedly be replaced with generic rewards.

New Battle Pass Structure

Alongside the unvaulting of old passes, Season 4 will also introduce a revamped system for the current battle pass. This new structure will present rewards in "tracks" rather than a linear progression of tiers. This allows players to unlock cosmetics in an order they prefer, similar to systems seen in games like Fortnite. Players will also gain the ability to swap out a Legendary skin they dislike for another from a curated selection once per pass. Blizzard has indicated that this change will not increase the time required to complete the battle pass, with the primary goal being to enable players to acquire skins for heroes they actively play. A potential drawback mentioned is that premium currency, previously distributed throughout the battle pass, will now be exclusively available at the end of the pass.

Monetization and Future Content

This adjustment in battle pass strategy comes as Overwatch 2 is reportedly performing well for Blizzard. The move away from strict FOMO in battle passes suggests a potential shift in the game's monetization approach. Season 4 is also set to introduce the new mech hero, D.Mon, and will launch on August 11. The continued collaboration with the K-pop group Le Sserafim, with their third skin collaboration teased for Season 4, also points to Blizzard's focus on other lucrative avenues for the game's revenue.
