Overwatch Devs 'A Little Scared' of Jetpack Cat and Bastion Combo

The introduction of Jetpack Cat to Overwatch, alongside four other heroes, marked a significant shift in the game's yearly themed update cadence. While the initial community reaction to the feline hero in a mech suit was largely positive, her in-game performance quickly proved to be a source of frustration for many players.

This sentiment stemmed from a particularly potent combination of Jetpack Cat and Bastion. This pairing enabled an "Apache helicopter meta," as described by players, where Jetpack Cat could ferry Bastion, in his turret form, into advantageous positions to eliminate the enemy team. The effectiveness of this duo was evident not only in public matches but also in the Overwatch Championship Series (OWCS), where it dominated from the outset.

Associate Game Director Alec Dawson acknowledged the development team's awareness of the combo's power during internal testing. "Internally we were like, 'oh, that's a little scary,'" Dawson stated. "We were play testing [Jetpack Cat and Bastion] a little bit. I think at one point it was also Jetpack Cat, Bastion, and Mercy. The full trio. It's like an even scarier helicopter."

Despite the acknowledged strength of the Jetpack Cat and Bastion pairing, Blizzard opted to release the hero without immediate nerfs. Dawson explained this decision as a deliberate approach to allow players to experience these "crazy stuff" moments. The team aims to strike a balance between preserving player fun and addressing balance issues, believing that these memorable, extreme gameplay moments are important to the Overwatch experience. "Because those are the moments that are going to be really exciting for players, those are going to be the moments that they remember in Overwatch, and that's important not to whittle away too early," Dawson remarked.

While Jetpack Cat eventually received adjustments, including a nerf to her mobility while carrying another hero, the initial decision to allow her powerful combinations to persist highlights a developer philosophy of exploring gameplay extremes before implementing balance changes.
