Overwatch Director Explains King's Row Popularity, Admits All Maps Get Voted On

King's Row remains a standout map in Overwatch, frequently dominating player votes for its balanced gameplay that offers engaging experiences for both attacking and defending teams. Aaron Keller, game director for Overwatch, recently elaborated on what makes the map so iconic and confirmed that all maps in the game receive votes, reflecting a diverse player base.

Keller described King's Row as having "high ground there, but there's not oppressive high ground," allowing for various heroes to utilize different strategic positions. He also noted that the map's design keeps players engaged in the action without long periods of downtime, fostering a sense of constant engagement. "I think that there's something about being able to play through most of the space in a map that I think is just more satisfying for both teams," Keller stated. "It can feel really good to hold a team at spawn, but you don't want that every game. You want to feel like it's a close [game]."

The map's clear sightlines and the proximity of the payload to player engagements contribute to its appeal. For players, particularly those who favor support heroes, King's Row provides consistent opportunities for impactful team fights throughout its course. While many players gravitate towards King's Row, Keller acknowledged that player preferences are more varied than often assumed.

"Every single map in the game gets a vote," Keller said. "For some people Clash or 2CP is their favourite mode in Overwatch. Even though we think that there's some issues with them, but I think the playerbase is more varied than we think sometimes." He mentioned that even maps like Assault (2CP), which was removed from the rotation due to design issues, were still favored by some players. This variety in player choice is why every map continues to be part of the voting system, even if King's Row often emerges as the popular consensus.
