Overwatch will not receive its highly anticipated "Unvaulted Passes" feature as originally planned. The system, which aims to let players earn battle pass cosmetics they may have missed, has been postponed until the start of Season 5. It was initially expected to arrive as part of a mid-cycle update for Season 4.

Overwatch director Aaron Keller stated in a blog post that the delay is intended to provide the quality assurance team with additional time for thorough testing. Keller emphasized the desire to ensure the long-awaited feature launches with minimal bugs, noting that "no one likes bugs." This approach aims to deliver a polished experience for a feature that allows players to acquire items such as emotes and sprays from previous battle passes that they might have missed.

The concept of Unvaulted Passes follows a trend seen in other live-service games, where time-restricted battle passes have become common. Fortnite popularized this model, and Overwatch adopted it in 2022. More recently, games like Marvel Rivals have begun to remove expiration dates from their battle passes, allowing players to purchase them and progress at their own pace without a time limit.

While Blizzard confirmed the arrival of Unvaulted Passes in August, some details regarding older currency and Mythic skins not carrying over have been mentioned. However, specific mechanics of purchasing and progressing through these passes remain unclear. Keller has indicated that more information will be shared prior to the commencement of Season 5.

Overwatch Season 5 is currently projected to begin on October 6. Further details about this season's content are expected to be revealed during BlizzCon, which is scheduled for next weekend.
