Overwatch is set to implement significant changes to its battle pass system in Season 4, introducing a multi-track progression and a new feature that allows players to swap out unwanted legendary skins. According to Overwatch product director Chris McCabe, this overhaul aims to address player feedback regarding the battle pass's reward structure, acknowledging that not every player will be interested in the cosmetics offered for their preferred heroes.

The new system, detailed in a "Director's Take" blog post, will divide the battle pass into six distinct segments. Players will first complete an introductory track for each season, after which they can choose to progress through any of the remaining five reward tracks. The active track can be changed at any time. Following the completion of all six tracks, players will continue to earn prestige titles and rewards as usual.

A key addition is the "Tier Hack" functionality, available once per premium battle pass purchase. This feature, located at the end of a reward track, will allow players to replace a legendary skin with an item from a curated list of past shop and loot box skins. This aims to provide more agency, allowing a player who primarily plays Tank heroes, for example, to swap a Cassidy skin for a Reinhardt skin they might prefer.

The pool of replacement skins available through Tier Hack will vary each season and will always include options for heroes across all three in-game roles. For Season 4, 12 legendary skins will be part of this pool.

Blizzard stated that while the user interface and experience are being updated, the overall number of rewards and the effort required to progress through the battle pass will remain consistent. The company is not attempting to reinvent the battle pass model but rather to provide players with greater control over their reward acquisition.

This approach shares similarities with battle pass systems found in other live-service games, including Call of Duty, Battlefield 6, and Blizzard's own Diablo 4. Overwatch Season 4, launching on August 11, will also introduce a new MEKA Tank hero, D.Mon.

In related news, Blizzard recently announced that the "Stadium" game mode will not receive further content updates. Despite this, Overwatch has reportedly seen considerable success recently, with a report attributing the shooter's performance as a significant factor in Blizzard's current standing as Xbox's top studio.
