The phenomenon of Palworld, the monster-taming open-world survival crafting game, is expanding with a new trading card game developed by Bushiroad. Set to release on July 30, the game has already seen significant interest, with its first Booster Pack, 'Dawn of Palpagos,' selling over 3.5 million packs worldwide.

The Palworld card game is designed for two players and centers around using a combination of Pal cards, gear, events, and structures to defeat an opponent. Players begin with a main deck of 50 cards and a 10-card soul deck. Setup is straightforward, involving shuffling both decks and preparing for play.

Core Mechanics

Gameplay revolves around resting soul cards to play other cards, with Pal cards serving as the primary units. These cards feature new artwork of popular creatures and include numerical values dictating their soul card cost, attack power against other Pals or structures, and strike damage against opposing players. Gear cards can enhance Pals or damage opponents, event cards offer powerful one-time effects, and structure cards enable unique abilities when Pals are assigned to them.

Players draw two soul cards each round, potentially limiting early-game options. With each subsequent round, a new card is drawn from the main deck, and two new soul cards are added. During the main phase, players can play any number of cards for which they have sufficient soul cards, in any order they choose. As the game progresses, a larger pool of soul cards allows for more complex move chains and the deployment of powerful cards that capitalize on earlier strategies.

Winning the Game

Each player starts with 10 Life Points, with the objective being to reduce the opponent's Life Points to zero. Opponents can choose to have a Pal block direct attacks. If a player takes direct damage, they must flip cards from their deck equal to the attacker's strike value. An attack is completely nullified if one of the flipped cards bears the Lucky icon.

Strategic decisions are crucial each round. Players must consider whether to attack the opponent directly, target specific Pals, or dismantle structures for their bonuses. When attacked, players must decide whether to sacrifice a Pal for defense or risk nullifying the attack via the Lucky icon. The game encourages constant assessment of risk versus reward.

Getting Started

For new players, the recommended entry point is through a Trial Deck. Two variants, Red/Blue and Green/Purple, will be available at launch as part of the 'Dawn of Palpagos' release. These decks include all 60 cards needed to play, along with a play guide, paper playmat, and life counter. Trial Decks also contain exclusive Super Parallel cards and a Booster Pack for initial deck customization.

Palworld cards range in rarity from Common to Super Parallel, with ultra-rare Super Special Parallels featuring special alternate art. Beyond the basic rules, the game offers layers of complexity for experienced players. Booster Packs can be purchased separately to diversify decks and refine strategies. The 'Dawn of Palpagos' Booster Pack is available at launch, and the 'Legends Awaken' Booster Pack is scheduled for release on October 30.

Future Releases and Events

Deck building involves understanding card synergies. Certain Gear cards are particularly effective with specific Pals, while some Pals directly complement each other's abilities. Other cards can alter the game board state, such as changing the time of day, which can activate specific Pal abilities.

Bushiroad has outlined a roadmap for future content, including Sleeve and Card Set Vol. 1 on October 2, two new Trial Decks on December 18, and Booster Pack Vol. 3 on January 29. In-person events, such as a demo caravan offering tutorial events throughout July and August, a Grand Release Tournament in August, and Shop Tournaments running from August to October, are also planned. Attendees at these events can receive exclusive promotional items.
