Pocketpair's creature-collecting survival game, Palworld, has received its 1.0 update, marking its exit from early access. While the patch notes detail numerous gameplay changes, a closer look reveals that several Pal designs have been visually reworked. These adjustments appear to address creatures that, upon the game's initial launch, drew criticism for bearing a very close resemblance to existing Pokémon designs.

Previously, certain Pals were constructed using silhouettes, limbs, and design elements that were strikingly similar to Pokémon characters, sometimes with minimal alterations to color palettes. Players and observers noted these strong similarities, with some Pals being described as direct inspirations or even "Frankenstein" constructions of existing designs. For instance, Verdash was frequently cited for its similarity to Cinderace, while others like Robinquill and Fenglope were compared to Decidueye and Cobalion, respectively.

The visual updates in the 1.0 release aim to create more distinction between these Pals and their Pokémon counterparts. Verdash, for example, now features less humanoid proportions and no longer mimics the distinctive legwear of its apparent inspiration. Robinquill and Fenglope have had their color schemes altered from Decidueye and Cobalion, respectively, and other detailed adjustments have been made to further differentiate them.

Despite these redesigns, the core of Pocketpair's legal issues with Nintendo does not stem from creature design similarities. Nintendo's ongoing lawsuit primarily concerns alleged patent infringements related to specific creature-capturing and riding mechanics within Palworld. While it is possible these redesigns could be part of an undisclosed settlement, there is no direct evidence to support this speculation at this time, especially given ongoing doubts about the validity of the Nintendo patents in question.

Nevertheless, the reworking of these creature designs suggests an acknowledgment from Pocketpair that some of the original creature aesthetics crossed a line regarding creative inspiration. The 1.0 update indicates that these issues are now being addressed following the game's significant commercial success during its early access period.
