A newly revealed Palworld creature, Panthalus, has ignited a debate among fans regarding its design similarities to the Pokémon Kyogre. The creature, described as a massive blue-green whale with a white belly, flared fins, and tribal markings, also features a large bronze decoration. This description draws immediate parallels to Kyogre, a legendary Pokémon known for its similar whale-like appearance, white belly, and tribal markings.
Social media discussions show a clear split in opinion. Some players argue that Panthalus is "clearly inspired" by Kyogre, with one fan calling the design "brazen." Video game content creator Josh Scorcher tweeted that while Game Freak does not own the concept of a divine whale creature, "you have to be incredibly dishonest to not immediately think of Kyogre when you see this." Others, however, maintain that the designs are distinct enough, with one commenter stating, "Literally the only thing they have in common is that they're both whales."
This controversy comes at a time when fans have noted subtle design changes to other Palworld creatures following the game's version 1.0 update. Species like Verdash, Robinquill, Fengallop, and Grintale, which previously exhibited more pronounced resemblances to Pokémon such as Cinderace, Decidueye, Cobalion, and Galarian Meowth, appear to have had their designs altered. These changes were not explicitly mentioned in the developer Pocketpair's patch notes.
Comparisons between Palworld and Pokémon designs are not new, with accusations of "ripping off" Pokémon designs surfacing even before Palworld's initial launch. The ongoing legal proceedings between The Pokémon Company and Pocketpair over patent use may also be a factor influencing design choices. A judgment in this legal battle is anticipated later this year.
Palworld recently transitioned out of early access with its version 1.0 launch. Developer Pocketpair noted the game's significant success, exceeding expectations and attracting over 40 million players since its early access debut. The company stated it would not increase the game's price beyond $29.99, reflecting its substantial player base.
