Panic, the manufacturer of the crank-powered Playdate handheld gaming system, is refunding customers who paid tariffs on the device. The Supreme Court's order for the government to return tariff fees has prompted Panic to pass these refunds on to its customers.

Customers who purchased a Playdate while tariffs were active are being notified via email about the refunds, which are being sent to their original payment methods. While the refund amounts are relatively small, with the highest noted being $25, this represents a significant percentage of the device's cost. The Playdate is currently priced at $250, and it launched at $179.

Customers who believe they are eligible for a refund but have not received an email notification are advised to contact [email protected] for assistance. The move by Panic sets a precedent that other companies could follow in refunding tariff-related costs. It contrasts with companies like Nintendo, which has declined to issue refunds to Switch 2 customers, stating that consumers received what they paid for.

Recent price increases in the tech industry have been exacerbated by factors such as the ongoing "RAMpocalypse" since the start of 2026. Passing on savings to consumers, especially now that prices are considerably higher, is seen as a reasonable step for manufacturers.
