Panic, the company behind the distinctive crank-powered Playdate handheld, is returning tariff refunds to its customers. These refunds stem from a Supreme Court decision that ordered the U.S. government to reimburse fees collected on imported goods.

The Playdate, which first launched in 2022, was subject to these tariffs last year, a broad category that impacted a wide range of gaming hardware. Following the Supreme Court's directive, Panic began notifying affected customers via email that a refund would be processed through their original payment method. This information was observed on platforms like LinkedIn and Reddit.

Customers who purchased a Playdate while the tariffs were in effect should expect to receive an email notification. For those who believe they are eligible but have not been contacted, Panic has provided a direct contact point at [email protected] for inquiries.

This approach contrasts with that of Nintendo, which has stated it does not owe rebates to consumers who bought its products at increased prices. Nintendo had previously raised prices on U.S. offerings, including various Switch console models, in reaction to inflated import tariffs. The company is currently seeking dismissal of a class-action lawsuit that argues consumers are entitled to a portion of potential refunds Nintendo might receive from the U.S. government. The tariffs imposed by the U.S. government affected numerous consumer electronics, many of which are manufactured in Asian production hubs, leading to price increases across the market.
