Path of Exile 2 is set to receive a death recap feature, addressing a long-standing player request, according to game director Jonathan Rogers. The feature, which made a surprise appearance during a live demo at ExileCon, aims to clarify the causes of player deaths, enabling them to better understand and fix their character builds.
"The thing that's not quite good is the damage over time tracking," Rogers admitted in an interview, "We do tell you that you took it but we don't know where it came from.” He assured that efforts are underway to refine this aspect, noting that damage over time is already somewhat discernible in the game. The primary goal of the death recap is to highlight the specific damage types and mitigation levels players experienced, guiding them toward necessary character improvements. For instance, a significant physical hit might suggest a need for more evasion or life, while excessive cold damage could prompt players to seek increased cold resistance.
Rogers also anticipates the death recap will provide a more focused channel for player feedback. "This may sound a bit funny, but I think it'll actually give our players an avenue to complain about the correct things," he stated. "Sometimes we just have monsters that have wrong balance values, it happens, and in the heat of battle you don't know what it was. Now you'll be able to say this particular monster is the one that has the damage that's off the hook and then it allows them to direct us to that."
While the feature is confirmed for Path of Exile 2's full 1.0 release on December 11, Rogers acknowledged that it will likely be a highly requested addition for Path of Exile 1 players. If demand is sufficient, the team plans to port the functionality over to the original game.
