Path of Exile 2 is gearing up for its first event league, Forbidden Rites, set to launch on September 4. This limited-time event aims to provide players with engaging content ahead of the game's full 1.0 release on December 11, focusing on a streamlined experience with unique twists on existing mechanics.

The Forbidden Rites league will introduce Ritual altars throughout the campaign, which will summon waves of monsters and reward players with loot. Some of these altars will feature a challenging "oops, all bosses" scenario, where multiple bosses can spawn simultaneously, offering a unique risk-reward for those who can overcome the onslaught. Successfully surviving these encounters could also yield powerful unique items.

A significant focus of this event league is the rework of the Trial of Chaos, an endgame activity that has been a point of contention for players. Previously described as a mode where players face difficult modifiers with little reward, the new Trial of Chaos will feature less punishing starting modifiers and will offer improved loot quality in exchange for player progression through its stages. Enhancements to door opening speeds and round transitions are also included, aiming to make this crucial part of unlocking ascendancy classes a more enjoyable experience.

Beyond the campaign and Trial of Chaos, Forbidden Rites will also accelerate endgame progression. Players will gain earlier access to the game's world map, where new zones featuring Abyss monsters will be available. Additionally, the Expedition league mechanic, which involves setting off explosives to reveal and fight monsters, will be integrated as a core part of the game.

While this event league offers new content and improvements, it will not include the sweeping balance changes originally planned for the 1.0 release. Those adjustments are reserved for the December 11 launch, which developer Grinding Gear Games acknowledges is a bold move given the game's intricate systems. This means that endgame strategies and build optimizations that prove effective in the current patch are likely to carry over to the full release with minimal changes.

Some players may opt to skip this event league due to the absence of major balance shifts, but for others, it presents an opportunity to experiment with different playstyles. The recent footage of the new duelist class has inspired some to consider moving away from spellcasting and embracing melee combat in preparation for Path of Exile 2's full launch.
