Path of Exile is set to remove its long-standing and often-criticized colored socket system in an upcoming expansion. The change, arriving with the Curse of the Allflame expansion on July 24, will replace the red, green, and blue sockets on most items with neutral, gray ones that accept any skill gem.

This adjustment aims to lower the barrier to entry for new players who may find the socket color matching a significant hurdle. "I've had a bit of an axe to grind for a number of years now," said game designer Octavian, referring to the system he never found particularly engaging. Game director Mark Roberts echoed this sentiment, stating that the removal is part of an effort to "allow people who tried the game and found it too complex to come back and try it again."

While socket colors have been a fundamental part of Path of Exile's character customization since its release 13 years ago, they have frequently caused frustration. Players often struggle to fit desired skill gems into their gear due to mismatched socket colors, a problem that persists as they acquire new equipment. The developers considered simplifying this system during the development of Path of Exile 2, but ultimately decided against it at the time. However, the idea resurfaced and gained consensus.

"We've run it by dozens of people in the office and usually the response is, 'What, you can change that? That's a good change, but you can change that?'" Octavian added, indicating a general positive reception to the idea.

Beyond the socket color overhaul, Curse of the Allflame will also introduce a crafting bench to every town, making it easier for players to add crucial stats like elemental resistances to their gear. This change moves the crafting bench from players' personal hideouts to more accessible locations, akin to how stashes are available in towns.

The expansion will also feature substantial reworks to the Abyss and Legion activities. Abyss, in particular, will adopt a system similar to that in Path of Exile 2, where players pursue ground fissures to fight encroaching creatures. Grinding Gear Games has indicated that further reworks to existing mechanics, potentially including the Bestiary system, are planned for future leagues as the studio continues to refine the game for both veteran and new players.
