Patrick Stewart's Colleagues Mourn Passing of the Beloved Actor

Patrick Stewart, celebrated for his iconic roles as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek and Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men film series, died Wednesday at the age of 86. Tributes from friends, collaborators, and fellow actors have flooded social media, reflecting the profound impact Stewart had on the entertainment industry and the deep affection he inspired.

His passing followed a brief battle with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia, according to a statement from his representative. Stewart's career, spanning over six decades, left an indelible mark across theatre and screen, earning him widespread admiration.

The X-Men Family Pays Tribute

Ian McKellen, who shared the screen with Stewart in multiple X-Men films and the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, remembered his longtime friend and colleague. "Before everything else, Patrick was defined by being born and bred in Yorkshire, the proud county in the north of England which he loved to the end," McKellen wrote. He highlighted Stewart's honesty and Yorkshire roots, stating, "Yorkshiremen have no truck with half-truths or avoidance of big issues. He wore his heart on his sleeve, which made him a man to rely on, to admire and in my case, love."

Hugh Jackman, who portrayed Wolverine alongside Stewart, shared his grief on Instagram. "We lost one of the greats of stage and screen today. And, in my book, a tremendous friend and man. I learned so much from him. I will miss you, Patrick Stewart, all of my days," Jackman posted.

Dafne Keen, who co-starred with Stewart and Jackman in Logan, spoke of his kindness and talent. "He was such a kind, genuine, funny, unique, caring and charming man," Keen wrote, recalling his jokes and "colourful reading glasses." She added, "Every single day spent working by his side was an honour and a privilege I can’t quite believe I had. He was a walking master of his craft, and of life. One of the greatest of our time, on stage and on screen."

Original X-Men cast members James Marsden and Rebecca Romjin also offered their remembrances. Marsden described Stewart as "kind and generous, with extraordinary talent and a wicked sense of humor," adding that it was "impossible not to feel charmed, enlightened and downright joyous in his presence." Romjin, who played Mystique, shared a video message calling Stewart "positively delicious, hilarious, naughty, [with an] incredible sense of humor." She also noted his powerful voice, honed through classical training, as an inspiration.

Star Trek Stars Remember Patrick Stewart

Jonathan Frakes, who played William Riker and directed Stewart in various Star Trek productions, simply posted, "Rest in peace my friend." Wil Wheaton, who portrayed Wesley Crusher, shared a photo with Stewart, captioning it, "Godspeed, Captain."

William Shatner, Stewart's contemporary Captain Kirk, reflected on the somber week which also saw the passing of Star Trek's Walter Koenig. "What a heartbreaking week it has been," Shatner wrote on X. "Sir Patrick Stewart was a friend, a colleague, and a magnificent actor. From the stage to the bridge of the Enterprise, he brought intelligence, grace, and a deep sense of humanity to everything he did. Captain Picard stood for the best of us, and so did the man who played him. I was filled with affection and admiration for him and his work. My heart goes out to Sunny and his family. He will be deeply missed."

George Takei, who originated the role of Hikaru Sulu, acknowledged Stewart's legacy. "Fans across the world mourn the passing of a true and irreplaceable legend. As Captain Jean-Luc Picard, Patrick Stewart took the starship Enterprise to places it had never gone before, and he inspired a whole next generation of star-gazers who looked longingly ahead to a brighter future for all humanity. Our hearts are heavy, indeed. Rest in the heavens, Captain," Takei stated.

Kyle MacLachlan, who worked with Stewart on David Lynch's Dune, shared memories of their time together. "My friend, we shared some memorable times…from the deserts of Arrakis to the mysterious jungles of Thailand and onto the New York stage," MacLachlan wrote on Instagram. "I already miss you. You will always be my Gurney Halleck and I, your young pup."

Marvel Studios also released a statement honoring Stewart's "grace, intelligence, and humanity." The official Sesame Street social media account paid tribute as well, thanking Stewart "for being our friend and for sharing your brilliance, joy, and kindness with the world."
