PAX Unplugged is expanding its reach with a new tabletop convention set to launch in Houston, Texas, from June 25-27, 2027. This marks the first time the tabletop-focused event, co-organized by Penny Arcade and ReedPop, will be held in the southern United States in approximately six years, following the cancellation of PAX South in 2021. The George R. Brown Convention Center will host the inaugural PAX Unplugged Houston.

Penny Arcade, originally a webcomic founded in 1998 by Jerry Holkins and Mike Krahulik, has grown into a major force in the gaming convention landscape. The first PAX event was held in 2004, and the convention brand has since evolved to include multiple yearly shows across the country. Holkins noted that PAX Unplugged has a distinct energy, often leaving him feeling revitalized. Krahulik described the choice to bring the event to Houston as targeting a region where the convention brand could have a significant impact, humorously referring to Houston as a "dork population" capital.

The decision to host the event in Houston was based on factors such as infrastructure, airport capacity, hotel availability, and the city's demographic profile, including a large, tech-savvy young population. This expansion into Houston represents a strategic move to tap into a growing market for tabletop gaming. The organizers believe the current period is ideal for such an expansion, citing the significant growth and innovation within the tabletop industry.

PAX events have long served as a gateway for video game players to explore tabletop gaming. Holkins explained that while PAX Unplugged is the most concentrated expression of this, tabletop content has become a substantial part of other PAX shows, such as PAX East, often occupying a significant portion of the exhibition floor. This integration reflects Penny Arcade's long-standing intention to introduce players to the appeal of tabletop systems, mechanics, and rules, which they see as distinct from, but complementary to, video games. The success of their Acquisitions Incorporated Dungeons & Dragons show, which began as a podcast in 2008 and evolved into live performances at PAX conventions, exemplifies this strategy.

In a notable shift, Acquisitions Incorporated recently transitioned from Dungeons & Dragons to Daggerheart, a tabletop role-playing game created by Critical Role. Holkins described Daggerheart as a system that encourages greater interplay between the Game Master and players, formalizing mechanics that allow for dynamic storytelling and resource management, drawing inspiration from independent RPGs. This collaboration with Critical Role has opened new avenues, with discussions underway for more elaborate series and potential contributions to Daggerheart's world and mechanics. Despite the growth and evolution of its events and partnerships, Penny Arcade founders emphasize a commitment to their roots and maintaining the conventions as inclusive, welcoming spaces.

Badges for PAX Unplugged Houston are expected to go on sale later this year.
