PC-98 Horror Classic Dead of the Brain Arrives on Steam

Steam is set to receive a wave of classic Japanese pixel art games, beginning with the horror adventure title Dead of the Brain. Released during the heyday of Japan's NEC PC-98 personal computers in the 1980s and 1990s, these games are known for their intricate visual novels and adventure titles, often characterized by distinctive pixel art and, frequently, adult content.

For decades, few of these games received official English releases due to various factors, including their mature themes. However, a fan translation group known as WINE has been diligently working to bring these titles to a wider audience. Over the past three years, WINE has released five English translations for PC-98 games, including Dead of the Brain and its sequel. The first installment is now slated for an official release on Steam just in time for Halloween. This version boasts enhancements such as autosaves and optional quality-of-life improvements like hover hints and hit boxes.

While acknowledging that the games can be somewhat basic and tedious as adventure titles, with themes that include sexual violence, the visual presentation remains a significant draw. The article notes that some of the more graphic death scenes are not revealed in the game's trailer.

This release marks a notable collaboration between FairyTale, a prominent PC-98 studio from the 1990s, and Fakku, a US-based manga publisher. Fakku has reportedly acquired the publishing rights for FairyTale's entire catalog, suggesting that numerous other PC-98 games could be heading to Steam in the future. The partnership with WINE for Dead of the Brain is seen as a positive initial step. This initiative aims to make this era of pixel art more accessible, bypassing the need for complex PC-98 emulator setups.
