PC Gamer has released a new quiz designed to test players' ability to identify games based on their pixel art styles. The quiz presents cropped screenshots from 15 different titles, ranging from traditional 8-bit and 16-bit aesthetics to more modern interpretations inspired by those eras.
While acknowledging the impressive advancements in visual hyperrealism in modern gaming, the quiz emphasizes a preference for stylized and exaggerated art directions over photorealism. This preference is exemplified by games with elegant art styles, such as Okami or Disco Elysium, and particularly the beloved pixel art found in many RPGs from the 16-bit era. Titles like Hyper Light Drifter and Replaced are cited as examples of modern games that continue to showcase detailed pixel work.
Players are given 10 minutes to name all 15 games featured in the quiz. The challenge aims to engage players with gaming trivia, particularly focusing on a specific aesthetic that has maintained its appeal from 8-bit, 16-bit, and even 32-bit games into adulthood.
PC Gamer also notes that this pixel art quiz is one of several trivia challenges available, with others covering topics such as healthbars, in-game currencies, and patch notes. The publication encourages players to share their scores and favorite pixel art games, suggesting that unused selections may appear in future quizzes.
