Peak, the cooperative "friendslop" title that achieved over 10 million sales within its first year, is preparing for its final major update. Titled "The Final Ascent," this update is scheduled for release on August 11 and promises a significant challenge for the game's established player base.
The update will introduce two new late-game biomes: the spectral Gloom and the medieval fortress-like Citadel. These will replace the current Caldera and The Kiln biomes, rotating them out of the game. Footage of The Final Ascent showcases the Gloom as a desolate, ghostly swamp, while The Citadel appears to be a perilous medieval structure featuring traps such as swinging flails. The update also teases a formidable monster that players will likely encounter during their ascent.
Peak, a collaborative project between developer Aggro Crab and Landfall Games, originated as a game jam experiment and rapidly gained widespread success. Its popularity even led to a Fortnite collaboration that reportedly cost more than the game itself. A key factor in Peak's success was its accessible price point, with developers noting that prices under $8 often feel like $5 to many consumers, thereby lowering the barrier to entry for a vast audience.
While Peak celebrated its one-year anniversary in June, the developers have consistently stated it is not a live-service game, and that content updates would naturally decrease in frequency leading into 2026. "The Final Ascent" has been repeatedly identified on Steam forums by the developers as the last significant content update. Both Aggro Crab and Landfall Games are presently engaged in developing new projects. The success of Peak, alongside titles like REPO and Landfall's own Content Warning, has contributed to the rise of the co-op-centric "friendslop" subgenre, though the naming convention for this category may evolve.
