Developer Exbleative, known for its photography game Umurangi Generation, is preparing to release Penguin Colony, a new title that offers a distinctly different experience. The game's recently released demo showcases a journey through the Antarctic, where players embody penguins facing loneliness, fear, and cosmic intrigue, all narrated by Lenval Brown, the voice actor from Disco Elysium.
Players take on the role of a penguin, with the ability to slide on their belly, jump, and swim. Movement on land is limited by a stamina meter, particularly on steep icy inclines. The game allows players to inhabit various penguins, including different sizes and species, each offering unique advantages and disadvantages. For instance, a baby penguin can fit through small gaps, but has reduced swimming capabilities, while an adult penguin offers more stamina.
The control scheme is described as somewhat awkward, contributing to the game's unique atmosphere. While waddling can feel stiff, sliding on the belly offers a smoother experience, aligning with the natural movement of penguins. This awkwardness, however, seems to enhance the overall presentation of the game.
The narrative takes a dark turn as players progress towards a human outpost and later an obelisk structure purportedly linked to an ancient Aryan race. Throughout this journey, Brown's narration provides a disquieting and isolating commentary on the player's experiences in the frozen landscape. The game incorporates collectible glowing orbs, which restore stamina and manifest as random words, such as "indigenous" and "encyclopedia." In one instance, an orb was obtained after witnessing a man's head explode, producing the word "sex."
Despite its short length, the demo for Penguin Colony establishes a foundation for a unique exploration of fascist ideology, a theme unexpected for a game centered on penguins. The title is slated for a 2026 release, and its demo is currently available on Steam.
